I've noticed that the water level in my overflow drops a lot after changing a filter sock. Any idea why this might happen? I have an IM 100 INT....

Might be too much flow for the sock. It handles the flow at the beginning (hence the lower level) but as things start to get trapped in the sock isn’t able to keep up.

Any ideas on how to avoid this?

are you able to lower the flow? Are the socks new?

Also make sure that the overflow pipe that puts the water in the sock ends above the water line.

I could lower the flow but wouldn't the change be the same? The pipe needs to be below the water line otherwise it will be noisy

Change meaning the socks? I guess you could just make it your process to change the socks as you see the overflow level raise. If you lower the flow thru the sock, it may be able handle it better and last longer

You may not have your drains set up correctly. The socks should have absolutely no impact on the water level in your overflow. It should only be effected by the return pump flow and the drain rate. Neither should be affected by the socks.

Socks shouldn't effect it but for a quick fix you could try a larger micron sock, might not get clogged as fast.

Thats what I would think but I will post a pic shortly of the setup....I've noticed that when I change my socks, the water in the overflow drops like 4 inches.

Is the level in your sump where the return pump constant?

Could a new filter sock cause a DC pump to push more water? I know it causes skimmers to overflow...

No, the impact on the skimmer is unrelated. I still have that happen on freshly washed socks.

I'm going to pay better attention to all the levels before and after I take off this filter sock once it gets dirty

I have noticed overall my overflow fluctuates on a daily basis....could it be an issue with my pump?

This is how it looks. Sock is off right now.

In a Bean Animal drain, you should have at least 2 lines going into your sock area. The 3rd, the emergency drain, is typically routed so that it discharges above the water level in the skimmer section so that it splashes as a warning.

And do be clear, you are calling your overflow the area in the display tank where the water collects prior to going down the drain, correct?

Yes I do have a 2nd and third drain but they both go into my refugium. Yes, that is the overflow...its a CTC
