As much as I hate this fish, I do have a clownfish in a single tank. I can say they are worth the money you invest in them. They are pretty and iconic in their looks. They are active and a great character in a reef, they can be friendly but I recommend adding fish that can tank a few hits from the little buggers, and they are very hardy and easy to keep.

I would say my copperband butterfly fish and my black long nose tang. Both are beautiful. My Mimic tang as well has a great temperment. All 3 are very healthy, active fish, look beautiful. Everyone loves the black long nose tang in person. He's old as well, 7 years old. . .

It's not that cheap, but I love having a blueface angel. To me, it's one of the most beautiful fish, it's active, mine is very healthy, and it hasn't been a jerk in the 3 years it's been in my reef.

Cleaner wrasse definitely ranks up there. Although not as cheap as it used to be, LFS still have these in the $20-30 range. Always active and seeking out other fishes to "clean" in my tank. Difficult to QT since they don't take copper treatment. Once established, a must have member of the utility fish crew.

May seem a silly answer, but If you can manage to get them without uronemia, a group of standard issue $2 green chromis are still one of my absolute favorite must-have fish. Especially if you can manage a decent sized shoal of them. Not much utility in them but they’re fun to watch
Bpb - where can you find any fish for $2
