I have to 3rd or 4th the Scopas Tang... I was on the fence on a yellow tang, but I saw this guy at LFS and had to have it. Time and time again I wall by my tank and he catches by eye and I just stare at him, what a beautiful fish.

I also really like my onspot foxface, every once in a while he will stretch all his fins and it just looks so freaking cool. My foxface and Scopas tang are joined at the hip, they are never apart, roaming the tank pecking at the algae everywhere together.

another one is the royal gramma, always out, drop dead beautiful, I think they are pretty reasonably priced.

When it comes to being healthy, nice looking, good tempered, and an asset to the overall vision of your saltwater reef aquarium, which fish is the best bang for the buck? Let's talk about it!

Please consider the health, looks, temperament and activity.

Which fish do you think is the "best bang for the buck" fish?

Probably as rare beautiful utilitarian fish I have is the Dusky wrasse, always out , not shy and eats worms and creepers

Melanarus wrasse -- eats pests, a rare splash of green (few green fish to add) and pink/orange stripes, very outgoing, relatively hardy, and inexpensive

red stripe cardinals!! in schools they act like freshwater tetras…
and they are HARDY
i’m jealous of the people that get Caribbean fish cheap… i get mine at like $55 for a gramma/chalk bass and $75 for a neon goby

Lots of fish can turn into bullies and general nightmares, but I've had good luck with Pajama Cardinals, Banggai Cardinals and Red Stripe Cardinals.

My Fiji Christmas wrasse! Absolutely beautiful, super active and personable, and the least aggressive fish in my tank! I’ve actually seen him bring food to and “defending” weaker or newer fish in the tank! (I know that sounds fake or have some other excuse but it’s happened too many times to be pure coincidence)

Hmmm… tuff one… I’m sure everyone is going to say some type clown for the most part. I would say my favorite is a toss up. The Royal Gamma is colorful out and loving life. Only down fall is they are timid. The Red Hawkfish is always a go too. Out and about has the in your face I’m watching you Mr. thing going on. Downfall it like to pick on your cleanup crew…if under fed might I add.

Scopas tangs! Cheap and effective :)
May seem a silly answer, but If you can manage to get them without uronemia, a group of standard issue $2 green chromis are still one of my absolute favorite must-have fish. Especially if you can manage a decent sized shoal of them. Not much utility in them but they’re fun to watch
My favorites 1 and 2 right off the bat. 100% agree.

In addition for raw function and pure personality would be the lawn mower blenny. If it’s not picking at the rocks it’s perched up chilling fat and layback shooting you the side eye

Pajama Cardinal is 10 years old. Moves about the whole tank nice and slow like it’s in charge.

Ruby Red Dragonet. Beautiful fish that loves to move among your corals. Get em trained to eat frozen food and watch em grow.
