I have such a small spending budget... I know it's early, but since Thanksgiving and Christmas is so expensive, I already sent my recipient their secret Santa gift yesterday. Otherwise, I'd be afraid of not coming through for them. I got them a coralline magnetic frag rack. I reeeally hope they like it!

We had a few running around the club at some point a more than a decade ago. I think either Calfo or Steve Pro got them from somebody or the club purchased a few with the intent of cutting them apart at a meeting to show the scam. If there was one here with club stuff, it likely went in the trash many years ago. Now I do wish I had one actually!
investing can have multiple meanings. I guess in the context of reefs, the investment is one that provides emotional satisfaction over the course of time, like our corals and fish.

My best investment is also along these lines: it's ornamental macroalgae that can both beautify the display and take up a lot of excess nutrients. CUC can fit in this category as well.
Agreed. It's an investment in time well spent. Expensive, yes, but there's a reason so many of us keep with it.
Tied between ro/di and ato. I doubt I would have a tank, even a nano, without those. Everything else I can deal with. Those two items for me are non-starters.
I did have a biocube once and those seal up pretty well which mitigated needing either, but no doubt the system is healthier with ato keeping salinity stable.
Every single other equipment item except perhaps a return pump of some sort I don’t need as could use other options. I have had reefmat, alkatronic, trident, apex (of course), whatever the controller was that used to compete with apex (forgot the name), skimmers, algae scrubbers, fuges, mh, t5, led, PC, awc… pretty much all one can imagine but while there were nice and I liked most, nothing was as important to me as ro/di and ato although it’s a very boring answer.

Best is tough. Anything that makes it easier to enjoy the tank is a huge win in my book.
I cant imagine not having:

Hydros WE
RODI
Soon to be running KHGuardian
Reefmat
Skimmer
Of this list the only requirement in my mind is RODI. Everything else can be done wo, but they sure are nice to haves.

Best for me was the long term investment of diver collected live rock & live sand. I build systems with a primary focus on the microbial food web. After that I am a minimalist as I admit I am a Laissez Faire Reefer.
I hear much in the way of ATO's. I've never run one. It MUST be good to have ao many mentions! And RODI's as well! I used to go fill up 4x 5G jugs at the local big box store to handle evap on a 90g snd a 10g. Lots of lifting and lots of TIME!

I thought I hauled a lot of water for weekly 25% water changes on my 25g lagoon. You definitely have me beat. Of course, I had to ride the bus to a different town to get rodi water. I actually just ordered it from brs yesterday...
And somewhere, there's a 23 year old kid with a strong back that does what I did, just with 800g lol!
I wish I was either 23, or had a nice strong back. Both wound be nice!
