Best substrate for shaving brush

What's the best substrate for shaving brush macroalgae? I have a bag of CaribSea sea Bahamas oolite, which is so fine it clouds up the water if disturbed. Its almost like dust. Will they do well in this? I'd rather use the more course "special grade" sand if they will do well in it, but I need to use this sand for something.
