This works well for removing flatworms as well.
You can also attach a toothbrush on the end of your hose, makes it a little easier...

That's the way it's been done for decades. BRS even has a vid on that method.

Great video. Have you introduced a sea hare for a few days ever? Adding one of these after a clean up like you did really helps finish off remaining algae. For a tank your size a seahare would only need a about 2 days, maybe three to completely wipe out all visible algae. Helps separate the time between your syphon trick. Be sure to take the Seahare back to LFS when all the algae's gone or loan to someone else.

I did once but it just disappeared. I used to have a sea hare in my first tank when I was new to the hobby and it did great.
