My Koran angel is about the size of a dinner plate with his fins extended. The snowflake eels are 16 and 20 inches.
My foxface is about 8 inches as is my clown tang. The sailfin and niger trigger are only about 6-7 inches.

My favorite big fish is the volitans lionfish! I probably won’t ever keep one, but it’s still my favorite. I have a really cool custom print of one that I’m going to hang on the wall by my tank.

That’s a large angel. How many inches would you say he is and how long have you had him?

Do you expect any of your fish to outgrow the tank?
about 3 years. It was about 2.5 inches when I got him
10 inches now.
The Niger trigger was 4 inches and isn't growing nearly as fast as the tangs did. All of them where smaller when bought but are larger than the trigger now.

I hope it will be a long while before they do. There have many posts from people with similar fish the same age as mine or older that are much smaller in smaller tanks. I wonder if growth is somewhat inhibited by the size of the tank the fish are in.

What about your new 5 x 2 x 2?
Likely a year or so out before I start the project. The tomini, scopas, and foxface should be with me for another decade or so, so they'll come along unless I trade one of them off. I won't get any bigger fish than them, although I've toyed around in my head about getting a regal angel, since none of my fishes are really showstoppers. That would requite some coral changes...we'll see.

Here are just a couple of my big boys. Dussumieri and Sohal tang each about 12" for reference.

Just like everyone thinks their dog is the cutest dog ever, I think my Dussumieri (Deuce) is the best looking I've ever seen (or really close). He's my fav.

Big fish-wise I have (not all in the same tank) with current approximate size estimates:

Dussumieri Tang 12"
Sohal tang 12"
Gem tang 5"
Black hybrid scopas tang 7"
Chevron tang 7"
Blue Line Angelfish 5"
Regal Angelfish 4"
Bellus Angelfish male 7" (well over 8" with his streamers)
Magnificent Rabbitfish (Pair) 8" each
Foxface Lo 8"
Blue lined rabbitfish 7"
Gold lined rabbittfish 10"
Purple Tang 7"
Blue Hippo tang 6"
Clown Tang 11"
Achilles Tang 7"
Scopas Koi Tang 6"
Hybrid Powder Blue Tang 5"

And most amazing of all is they all get along great. Despite what the tang police etc may say, you can have multiple tangs if you plan it out correctly, pick the right ones to go together, and add in the correct order.

These guys range from between 2.5-4 years with me.

Hippo tang from 2007 till 2021 grew huge
Achilles tang since about 3 years
Chocolate tang since around 4 years
2yellow tags since around 8 years
Purple tang since 10 years
Mustard tang since 3 years
Zebra tang since few months
Genicanthus semifasciatus since 6 years
All in 400 G tang

In frag tanks have couple sailing tangs for algae control and a magnificent foxface
Where did you get your Zebra tang. I had one a few years ago that died. I haven't seen any up for sale until this past month by Reefpro and their prices were insane compared to what I paid a couple of years ago ($2500 vs $1000)

Had it sourced from Mauritius along with a piscilineatus wrass, and shipped to an LFS in Dubai where I picked it up and travelled with it to Lebanon.
Not sure on current prices in US but 1000 seems very low and 2500 would be a bit on the high side. Shipping has gone way more expensive last few months so that changes everything I guess.

Cool, thanks. I got mine pre-COVID so prices have gone up I'm sure and it's a super scarce fish so anywhere that has them is going to charge whatever they can get. LOL.

Mine was a whole saga. Can read about it here if anyone is interested.

Happy Monday and happy BIG FISH week! This week we'll focus our topics around those fish that are big, beautiful and poop a lot. :) What are we calling big fish? Well I guess it's any fish that might grow up to 8-12"+ or so maybe? That's up for interpretation. When I personally think of "big fish" I think of surgeons (tangs), large angelfish, rabbitfish etc. So let's kick it off today with some basic questions!

1. What's your most favorite "BIG FISH" in the hobby?

2. How many "BIG FISH" do you currently house in your reef aquarium? Which ones?

Nice to see the love for king angelfish. Particularly colorful mature queen angels are nice too. I suppose if I were going to sink the resources into a large tank with the intent of housing a large show fish while still functioning as a reef tank my top choice would be a mature blueface angelfish.

Dussumieri Tang is a beautiful specimen! I have never seen one in person. Are they rare and pricey?
Not really all that rare or pricy. I got mine from Liveaquaria about 3.5 years ago. It was an Aussie which were often considered the most beautiful (Hawaiian as well but can't get those anymore). Right now LA has them listed for $50-380 which for a tang these days isn't really bad. Probably the biggest reason they're not super common is how big they get (20+ inches) and how big of a tank that will require (300+ gallons). I firmly believe no one should buy a fish like that unless they 1. Have a very large tank 2. Are 100% committed to one day getting a very large tank 3. Have a definitive plan of where to donate the fish as it gets bigger. I'm between 1&2 now my self (210G planning on 550G in the next year).

When I moved from PA to HI last year I spent twice what I paid for my "Deuce" to have him overnight shipped to me in HI. Now that I'm leaving HI I actually took him on the plane (via carry on) back to my family in the mainland that is taking care of my fish until I get my house here sold. Once I get a new house in the mainland the 550G tank will be built so I don't feel like such a slumlord like now for keeping him in only a 96" 210G. LOL.

but my favorite would have to be Neotrygon kuhlii, the bluespotted maskray (not the more common Taeniura lymma).

The kuhlii is also my favourite, the photos don’t do them justice but that is a very nice photo of one.
