Hi guys... so my daughter has been begging me to get a blue tang so this morning I caved and got her a small one... who immediately swam to my mp40 and got sucked in before I could pull out the powerhead.

its still moving, but its definatelty seen better days. The right side seems pretty mangled up. I moved it to a small breeder box with an air stone and a small piece of decoration so it can hide, but is there any chance it pulls through?

To me it does not look that bad - I would watch it - it may do fine. If I'm understanding you received it today - was it bought at an LFS - or through the internet? Normally, it's only weakened fish that get sucked into things - but this one is small enough. Watch for any sign of damage to the skin - that may become infected - hopefully if it survives. Did you QT the fish first? - or just buy it and put in tank?

I didn't QT him. He swam straight for it and then in... The right side is pretty gashed up. What would infection look like? I put some nory in with him and he's been nibbling at it so I'm hopeful...

Here's a closeup of the right side

That is a big wound - I might consider a treatment tank - with neoplex or kanaplex (not dosed into the whole tank). An infection usually will show redness - or worsening (enlarging) size.

I would treat with antibiotics before infection sets in just because the wound is so large.

While weak fish generally only get stuck to a powerhead, it sounds like he was disoriented.

Are either of those available in canada? From what I can tell, alot of stuff is banned up here...

You might be able to call a veterinarian and get a prescription for a similar broad spectrum antibiotic - if they are inclined to be nice - just with the pictures you have.

That would be my choice. If Canada is anything like the UK, these meds are not actually banned but just can't be sold without a prescription. Armed with info from this forum you could probably tell a vet exactly what you need, so a script would be easy money for him.

When a fish gets sucked into a powerhead, it is weak or moribund, and also the powerhead may be too powerful for the tank.
The body shows gross injury and I recommend seachem Kanaplex which is absorbed by the fish treating it internally and externally with added aeration.
Give this fish more than nori. Chopped mysis shrimp, LRS fish frenzy, Plankton and formula 2 frozen are good additions.

I’ve been trying to find a vet for my fish for years (I’m near Montreal). The only place that will take a fish as a patient is the Faculty of veterinarian medicine in St-Hyacinthe. They absolutely need to see the fish to prescribe anything and won’t do telemedicine. Which means you need to drive for 3 hours with your sick fish in a bucket to get to them.

It really sucks big time.

I watched him for about 20 minutes at the lfs and he was really active in the tank. When I added him to the DT, He swam straight to the right side and right into the powerhead(which might have been on too strong). It was running at 85%. I've turned them both down and put mesh over them.

When I woke up this morning, I checked the bucket and he's swimming around like a madman. I'm hoping that's a good sign since yesterday he seemed to be struggling alot.

When I add the kanaplex, do I just dose it into the water?

I added some mysis this morning. It looks like he ate it all. How much should I feed him? He's about the size of a dime.

I'm out in Ile Perrot so Ste Hyacinthe is only about an hour and a half away, but ya, it's 3 hrs there and back... you're right. It sucks...

Just get the meds and offer it food. Provide it water changes but try to keep it stress free as you can. If he makes it. Time to call him joker or scar!
