Hi Guys,

I had to exit the hobby when the Air Force moved me to England in 2012. Fast forward 9 years later and another tour to Northern Japan, our family is back. One of the big things my wife and I were excited about is getting the aquarium started again. I knew I wanted to go bigger this time, at least 150, but maybe 180 or larger if budget allows. I know it would have taken some time because buying a house and two cars took a huge toll on our finances, but I came across a unique tank that I knew I couldn’t pass up. It’s a standard 180 BUT with a center overflow. I had always eyed a peninsula style tank before, but this would be taking it to another level as a room divider…. And it was only $500 tank, stand and skimmer to boot (it came with a 72” six-row T5s) also, but I think I’ll go with a different lighting option. With all that comes some challenges though such as restoration, and more importantly equipment placement and aesthetics. This will be the divider between the front living room and the formal dining room.

So off we go :)

Any input is welcome!!! One of the goal is to minimize all the chords because I cannot hide them anywhere. I could try to drill for a closed loop, but I’m not crazy about the additional hazard and potential leaking issues, so I think that’s out of the question. I have an MP40 off to one corner just to see how it’d look aesthetically, and I don’t think I’d mind putting a few of those at the corners to get the flow going.

Before PCS’ing (military lingo for moving), I was really attached to the Tunze WaveBox. I know they’re not that popular now, but I love that standing wave look and I think I will do it too. The tank is Acrylic so I feel better about the strength of the tank against the standing wave going on 24/7

As luck would have it, there’s an unfinished area of the basement just underneath the tank. About half of the tank will be resting on the main supporting beam, so I feel pretty good about not adding any additional support, but let me know if that thinking is in error. The plumbing will go down on the space just to the left of the air duct.

Just to get my feet wet and get used to everything again, we got ourselves an Aquatop 40G AIO. The tank is a couple of months old now… so far so good. (And for those Tang police… the Hippo Tang is going to be in the 180 eventually lol.

Quite interesting with the center overflow.
It definitely opens up some possibilities… and challenges. If I were to build one myself from scratch, I’d probably go with at least 30” depth, or even 36” to get better aquascaping options around the overflow. But for $500… can’t complain.

This was the shape the tank was in when I picked it up. A couple of weekend’s worth of elbow grease and the tank is ready for water… but I’ll probably spend an extra weekend beefing up the stand and making some minor repair.
