There is a Facebook group. I'll not get into how much I loathe FB :( Just search "Austin Reefers".

Annoying as it may be, and it tends to be a contest over who can apply the most photoshop, is has become the easiest way to buy and sell coral and connect with other reefers

And the demise of nicely organized club sites.

Nice frags and tank!

Sadly yes you’re right. Local forums seem to have waning interest and Facebook is exploding. I liked it the way it was before, but it is what it is and I just go with the flow

lol a creepy picture I stumbled across. No significance. Random. Much like most of my
humor/personality

Darn, I was expecting/hoping it was a selfie. o_O

Your tank looks great man, and the thread was a good read so far. Your bulb changes that resulted in the pics on 10/27 were a great decision. Perfect mix in my opinion, I'm hoping to get my tank to look like that when I make the switch over to t5s in the near future. Thanks for posting all of the great pics and info, it's an inspiration for folks like me. Looking forward to that next build.

Thanks! I’m happy with the color of the bulb combo. Acros seem to be enjoying it as well. It’s funny how everyone’s perception of whiteness and blueness is so different. I read people saying that even putting a single coral+ among 7 other blue+ bulbs is just too white. This combo as it is looks almost the same as the tank did using two 250 watt radiums on m80 ballasts. Spectrally I’m sure that it’s very different though. On the next tank I’m
Sure I’ll change it up since I’ll be using blue LEDs as well

Very nice! You have some nice sized colonies.

I really like the Hawkins

Thanks man. Hawkins is one of those classics that I’ll always want to have. I like the new trendy corals of course and I’ll be investing in some very soon, but I will always love classic pieces

Finally got around to setting up the gyres. Goodness me that is some serious flow! I can’t run them over 40% without stuff on the sandbed getting picked up and carried away. Hopefully I’ll get some improved growth with such better flow. The controller is fantastic. It took a minute but once I got the hang of it I went from intimidated and annoyed to really liking it. It really is infinite what you’re able to program. Right out of then box the only thing you can’t do is have conditionals set based on other equipment.

What settings do you use for your gyres? I’ve been struggling with them since I got them. I also have a 90g

The controller seemed annoying at first but after getting the hang of it I’m a big fan. Right now I run automatic profile which is as follows

22:00-12:00: alternating gyre, 20% for 10 minutes each side, with a 30 second ramp up

12:00-14:00: alternating gyre, 70% for 10 minutes each side, with a 30 second ramp up

14:00-16:00: random mode for each pump 70% peak

16:00-18:00: alternating gyre, 70% for 10 minutes each side, with a 30 second ramp up

18:00-20:00: random mode for each pump 70% peak

20:00-22:00: alternating gyre, 70% for 10 minutes each side, with a 30 second ramp up

Thank you for that. Mine has been on 70% pulse w/ 0.8 sec ramp up then delayed pulse on the other side w/ 0.8 second ramp up on 70% as well. It gives me standing waves and a good sloshing but my acros specifically aren’t encrusting or growing well despite consistent parameters. Everything else is growing like crazy.

I’ll give your settings a try for a month or so and see if there’s any improvement.

Worth a shot. I’ll be honest I did standing waves for a while on previous powerheads but I tend to feel like the tank does better with more turnover. With standing wave I feel like the water is just shifting back and forth a couple inches. It doesn’t really get anything stirred up and carried around

The time periods where they’re both on random is really something. It is insanely turbulent. I had to actually rearrange some lps because of it. Make sure you don’t put them on sync or anti sync during random. Each pump needs to be randomly firing to get the correct effect. My water column is basically constantly filled with particulates and detritus now. It may bother some but I like knowing that everything is stirred up and in suspension and I like to think it’s getting eaten by something

Mine are synced alternating to max 50% , 4s up, 4s down. They rank up and down back and forth and it all mixes in the center. Motion is wild but controlled.
