I'm not necessarily trying to sell you on a sumped system.
Well I guess I'll try to sell the OP on it then.

I'm not saying you can't run a successful reef tank on canister filters, because there are people that do, but if you have the tank empty I would strongly consider drilling and adding an overflow for a sump. It seems like a lot of the equipment in this hobby is designed around people having a sump. I've only drilled one tank, and admittedly it wasn't as big or expensive as yours, but it was incredibly easy to drill. There is a good reason that so many people use sumps in this hobby.
