Is it common for a pair of clowns, when introduced when both are young, to eventually become a mated pair? Mine took 1.5 years, and are now in the middle of their 3rd spawn, but just curious if most people would experience this if they bought a young pair of clowns for their tank.

Females clowns do not reach productive age as early as males, female are often over a year old.
Two clowns in one tank, one becomes the dominate female and the other the productive male. A lone clown will become a female and can only be paired with a male, preferably a young clown not yet sexually mature. So yes two clowns in tank will pair if introduced prior to gender maturity.
