So my tank is about 7 weeks old and for the last few days i have had this brownish algae growing on everything. I have heard this is common for new tanks and that it will pass. It is a 29 gallon with a 10 gallon sump that i do 5 gallon weekly water changes. I have a small clean up crew(8 blue legs and 2 snails). Is this true that it will pass on its own?
Ph is 7.8
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrates 5ppm

Diatoms. First step of the uglies. Next you should be getting green algea. I wouldnt touch anything untill green algea phase. Completely normal and safe

This^^

The diatoms feed off silicates from the sand bed. Once the silicate is consumed the diatoms will go away.

Is there anything special i should do? Are there any snails/crabs that will eat this type of algae? I did cut the time of my lights from 10 to 6ish

You have a CuC. I would ride it out. Let your tank mature at its own pace and you should be good to go.

I love my emeralds but it depends on each crav some can be jerks. Could always play it safe and buy female ones they're usually more tame and stay smaller.
