I have no idea what this thing is. I thought it might be some type of sponge but can find nothing similar online. Any clues?

same thought-I have some that are firm and have been there forever, others are droopy and sometimes separate and fall from the rock theyre attached to.

See, now I see a sponge there. And a really nifty-looking ... chiton? snuggled up on the left side of it.

Poke it.

If it's a sponge, you'll know immediately, I think. It'll feel, well, spongy. Sponges are good to have around, and filter stuff out of your water.
