Hi all,

I've been cruising around trying to put my first tank together and I thought of putting an aquaclear 70 on my 10 gallon tank, but was wondering if I could go bigger. Saw a deal for a 110 on Facebook marketplace.

It seems like a 110 would give a lot of flow to a 10 gallon, but how much flow exactly? (This probably is impossible to calculate but would it be like 200 gph?)

And with an aquaclear, I've seen lots of people modding it to have refugiums and stuff. What else can be done with the aquaclear?

Thank you for your help!

200 gph should be no problem. Go for It!
Yeah I know 200 gph is no problem. I read that the recommended flow for tanks is like 6-10x the size of the tank so a 10 gallon could have like 600 gph.

I was just wondering how much of the aquaclear 110 would be contributing to that. If I get a hydor koralia nano with it would that be too much flow for most corals and fish?

I know it's hard to answer because rock placement plays a big part, but want to know people's thoughts.

Your math is way off!!

10x turnover in a 10 gallon tank is 100gph.
At 200gph your looking at 20x turnover. Probably won’t need any other water movement.

Thanks for the correction! Yeah I was way off base. I'll blame it on me being tired lol

Would an AC 110 give enough flow for SPS corals too?

Have you seen the Inappropriate Reefer’s YouTube series on his budget build? You may find it helpful. Good luck!

Chances are, you won’t get a colony big enough in a 10 gallon tank to block the flow from getting to the center though.... but if you did, you would need a small powerhead. I have about 3,000gph of flow in my 45 gallon tank.

We have a 20L in my classroom with sand and a crayfish. I use an Aquaclear 50 and it is more than enough flow. It blows the sand all over. We had to strategically place drift wood to minimize the sand blowing. I think more flow is always great but there is such thing as too much.

That’s only a 5 gallon tank though. Also remember, the more flow the filter is putting out, the more it will actually be mechanically filtering.

I use the Aquaclear 70s on my 10 and 20 gal. QTs. They work great. You can turn the flow down. Cool tip: If the impeller is making noise, get a small tube of food grade silicone and clean and then very, very lightly coat the magnet on the impeller. The first time, you may have to give it a little nudge to get going, but then it will be absolutely silent other than the water splashing.

According to the manufacturers website, the Aquaclear 110 outputs a maximum of 500gph. The flow is somewhat adjustable though. I have an Aquaclear 70 on my 20g QT and when I put the lever to the lowest setting it seems to cut the flow to about half. The Aquaclear 70 is listed at 300gph max.

Thanks for finding the actual numbers! Yeah I'll probably end up reducing the flow if I get the AC 110.
