Can a UV sterilizer be mounted horizontally over a sump?

So if I mainly want this for algae control, the directions seem to say I need higher flow than my 240gph return pump. Is this really the case? My tank is 40g so my pump is 4-5x turnover. Also, will the sterilizer kill bubble algae or aptasia spores that are released into the water column?

Mine is horizontally mounted, over the sump. Pump is feeding it in the sump and the return is right back to the sump

Mine is not plumbed into the return. I just have a sicce pump dedicated to the UV, with an Apex flow meter in the UV output line to make sure the flow stays at the desired rate. Much simpler this way …

Do your input and output both come from the same chamber in the sump? I’ve worried that if I put a higher gph pump in the sump for the uv unit that it would drain the water from the chamber it was in unless the output was in the same one. But then would I be resterilizing the same water? Does that make sense?

57 watt inline with return. 1.25” on the in and out.

Helpful to mount front-back for easy bulb changes/ cleaning.

If between sizes of the flow meter, go up. So use the 1”.

Thanks! I wish it would fit front to back but the cord to the ballast sticks out too far. If I plumb it with tubing I can easily remove it to change the bulb. Can you tell me what fitting you used to conn connect the tubing to the pvc pipe? I think it’s something like what I have on my return pump but I don’t know what it’s called. I really appreciate your help!

If between sizes of the flow meter, go up. So use the 1”.

Actually I measured the return pvc from the outside instead of the inside. It’s 3/4”

The options for Apex flow sensors is 1/2", 1" and 2". Don't go down in size. I would get the 1" and then adapt to your plumbing.

There are 3 types of pipe threading (screw type): NPT, BSPP and BSPT. In the US most pipe fittings use NPT, but overseas the other are used. Neptune products include the appropriate adapter.
