I often see majority of the lights hovering above the tank but I was wondering if its possible lay it right on top of the tank on top of the glass canopy? My tank has a full wood canopy set up and I need to keep that way due to kids. Any recommendations for specific lights as well?
Can lights be directly ontop of the tank?

Yea it's fine in most cases. It may just add heat to the tank.
If you post a pic of the tank and hood I'm sure everyone would love to suggest lights.
Different lights can be mounted in several ways to accomplish the same thing as well.
What do you have now?
I cut my wood top to let the leds lay into the canopy so they don't fall and nobody is blinded. (Esp me)

I hung mine up inside my canopy.
Some lights. Radions and hydras, in particular. Need to be about 9" above the water to spread out properly.
I would not put leds right on top of glass due to the heat. It will shorten the life of the leds. Possibly by orders of magnitude.

Heat and light failing too soon due to salt creep?
This is the canopy I have. I would say there's about 4-5 inches of space between the glass canopy to the lid of the wood canopy.
Here's what I did. These are 12in x 6 fixtures on a 48 w tank. I used 3/8 plexi and screwed it underneath.
I have about 8 or 9 in between the top and the water.
