Hi everyone,

can you help ID this crab. It’s very shy. I have never seen it come out completely of the rock work. This is the best picture. I have been able to get of it.

thanks!

Tell tale sign with tan hairy legs, and claws for killing/ ripping and tearing. Any crab with claws like that has got to go asap. Youll notice a big difference in claw structure between non reef safe crabs, and the semi reef safe ones like emerald or mithrax crabs.

I would just try and grab him with my hand honestly. Or use a pair of feeding tongs to grab him, ive done both methods.

He’s under one of the base rocks supporting everything. If I ever see him in the open I’ll spear him out

That would also work, Im not sure what your live stock is but everything is on the menu with a gorilla crab, snails, small fish, corals, shrimp. And Id hate for a little guy like that to murder a 40 dollar shrimp.

My tank is pretty lightly stocked atm. Just have a clown and a sand sifting goby.

Its not going to be an issue right now if you have no corals or dead/dying fish. Technically now its just gonna act like a member of your CUC, but once you add CUC it will try to eat your snails. With your stock its not an emergency especially if you have no corals. But it will have to be removed when you see fit.

Just found him in a little cranny in one of the rocks. Went in there and just tried crushing him. But I think the hole goes clean through the rock so he might’ve gotten away.

I also have a little self made trap in. The hunt continues!

Go for capture, they are surprisingly durable.

You could put some reef safe glue on a stick and try and stick to the crab with a poke.

Haven’t seen any sight of him yet. But that’s a good idea. If I see him again I’ll try that too.

Oh snap!! I just checked now at night. He was chilling by a knocked over GSP frag. Was able to get him out with some forceps.

I’m going to release him into the wild tomorrow. Don’t mind the dog hair lol.

He came on a Florida live rock so I’m assuming it’s ok to release him into a Florida channel right?

Please don't release anything into the wild under any circumstances. Even though it came in on Florida rock, it may not be native to your area of the state, or it could have picked up disease in your system. You can sump him, and he'll be happy down there. Even if you have an AIO, it'll be fine in the back compartment. I hope that this helps!

Unfortunately I don’t have anywhere to house him. All I have is a canister filter.
