Can you really use just 2x XR15 G6 to light a 4ft tank?

Hey,

I am looking into buying the lights for my 48x24x24 tank and I was wondering if you can really light it with just 2x XR15 G6's?

I started with 2 G5's on a 4 foot tank but added one more. Needed it for coverage.
I think I will end up buying 3 but I was looking at the specifications and it apparently the G6's has more spread than the G5's.

More spread but less par
I just bought one to try it out (pro) and I believe it would be best to get 3x.

I bought the pro version to compare it with the blue version. All the LFS use the blue version. I think I prefer the whites haha

Maxspect Razors on clearance at Coral Vue’s Outlet store. Great lights that will grow anything, look great, and a fraction of the cost. Just wanted to share just in case.

Totally depends on what coral you want to grow.

for what corals?

For soft corals and some LPS? yes

SPS tank? No.

I have a 4 foot by 2 foot by only 16 inch deep tank. Two isn't enough if you want SPS imo and my tank is much shallower.

Don't be fooled, it has more spread but the power supply, drivers, essentially the light is same/similar as g5. You still need an appropriate # for coverage.

I have 2 xr15 g5 blues over my 3ft mixed reef. Abplus at 75% intensity seems to be doing the job for now. My sps are still small. Not quite colonys yet. I will probably have to add a 3rd as my sps grow and shade eather.

I have same size tank and lights. Par meter them yesterday and was shocked at how low the par was. Fine for LPS and softs but SPS will require 100% on the AB setting just to get 250 at the top rocks.

If I was doing SPS in a 4 foot, I would do 4 xr 15's. Maybe even two LED bars on a 24 inch wide tank. Not talking about frags tho. I just don't think they have the umph to reach all parts on a wider tank with adequate light.

Personally, when I decide to add more lights, I will probably toss some kessils in next to the radions and some led bars, nice mix of led's I think will be even better. Just might need a floating canopy to make it clean.

If you're doing a canopy then T5s with the LEDs for the win

3 but orient them facing front to back rather than lengthwise.

I think a more appropriate question would be “SHOULD you light a 48x24x24 tank with Judy two xr15”. You can light that tank with one. You can run the tank with NONE. You just have to manage your expectations.

I agree. I decided that I will start just with two and I will add more as needed.

I have a mixed reef in a 4ft tank with two XR30 Gen 5s. It’s really good. I maybe could have gotten away with 3 XR15s, but I’m glad I have two XR30s.
I thought about 2 XR30's which would be the best I could do or 4x XR15's. I decided to go with the XR15's because I like how it looks

I have 3 XR15 PRO on a 4” tank.

At peak intensity the lights are at 100% point intensity [blues at 100%, red+green at 20%, warm white at 25%, cool white at 90%]. This results in an even 300-325 par wall to wall. The only obstacle for lighting is aquascape but that is up to you!
