I do but just to help keep some nitrates available. I just run a stack of foam inserts in an ehiem 2213 and clean it almost never. I could throw carbon in there but a canister is not as user friendly as a HOB or internal filter for quick changing carbon.

People certainly run traditionally fresh water filters instead of a sump on reef tanks with success but generally are softy LPS tanks.

Yeah I saw that video. To be fair though, he has got a very easy to clean filter but I also run a canister alongside my sump and the canister can get mucky but even though I have to take mine apart, if say 20 minutes from start to finish twice a week is ok by me

I ran a canister on my 46 gallon reef along with a HOB skimmer and fuge for 4 years. I ran filter floss and chemipure blue in it, no bio media. I’ll be honest I let it go a very long time between cleanings and still had to battle to keep nutrients up.

When I used a cannister on my 46 bow I used everything it came with. Biomedia, sponges, filter floss. Squeezed in a bag of carbon once after using fluconazole for bryopsis. Cleaned the whole thing thoroughly once a week including giving the biomedia a quick rinse in tank water.
