Couple things we need to know first.
What size is your refugium
What light are you using to grow your chaeto
What are your nutrient levels
What light cycle do you have your chaeto set to
what kind of bioload does the tank have (as far as how many fish, how much are you feeding ect..)

If your nutrients are very low, it may be attributing to why your chaeto isn't growing. I would lower your light cycle to only a couple hours. Basically what happens is the chaeto depletes your nutrients to undetectable levels, and with no nutrients you have no food source for it. And when something doesn't have a food source it dies out. Try dropping your photo period in half and see if that helps. Test your nutrients regularly just to make sure you don't get a spike from the change :)

Try adding iron, had same issue changed out lights went from tao to h80 to 380 then back to tao. Adding iron sparked growth. How do you like sump? What flow rate thry sump?

Iron supplement just add and watch, you could buy a test kit but heard it’s not very accurate

I had issues with cheato for a while. I dialed back my lights and added some shades, and that really seemed to help. BRS did some tests and showed that more light = more growth and export. But in my case the cheato just died.

Now I’ve got a 20 g fuge with a 20 watt hydroponic led with a shade. If I take the shade off, the cheato starts to die back. But... BRS was running the huge kessil hydroponic lights. Don’t know why mine can’t take more light.
