Hey everyone,

I just picked up some new chromis yesterday, and today I’m noticing a bump on the chin of one of them. I don’t remember seeing it yesterday but I could have missed it. Going to keep an eye on him to see if it gets bigger while they are in the observation tank. Sorry for the low quality foto’s, but does this look like a disease I should be worrying about? If so any suggestions for treatment?

As an aside I took a set of chromis back to one of my LFS last weekend because potential uronema concerns, so it’s been a struggle to find healthy ones. Hoping this isn’ta major issue or I might have to rethink trying to get some of these guys in my tank.

It could just be a bump from being caught up in a net. However, new green chromis often develop Uronema - a protozoan disease. This is an unusual spot for Uronema, but not impossible. Here is a link to an article I wrote about this issue:

Update: unfortunately the little guy died overnight, found him this morning. The bump appears to be deflated now, not red so hopefully not Uronema. Hoping it was an injury and not disease, but going to hold the rest of the group in the quarantine tank for a while and observe for further issues.

Sorry to hear that. I think we’ve all had issues with chromis. Nobody still has the same amount they originally bought sadly. I just hope they all are okay and it was an injury.

Ugh - a dead green chromis with its mouth wide open and a skin lesion (despite not being in a typical spot) is almost surely Uronema.

Good thing is Uronema can be isolated from most mature aquariums - it only becomes a disease with certain fish - especially newly acquired green chromis.

It’s been a week since the 1 chromis died, and the rest are looking good. No additional bumps or marks are visible. Hoping that means I’m in the clear. If the 1 died from Uronema would you expect more to have died or shown symptoms by now?

I'm like many of the others, I tried doing 3 chromis at once, one of which succumbed to uronema within 5 hours (my LFS was good enough to replace it despite have a no guarantee policy). All but one perished in the next several days. I was left with one who is still doing fine a couple months later. Mercifully the parasite never got to any of my other fish.

Probably won't spread, but I'd give it a full month, just to be safe.
