This is a follow up to a previous post I had made asking about the weird fuzzy algae I was growing. Chrysophytes they told me. And I was given a few different methods of getting rid of them, rip clean, increase feeding, add more fish etc. So I took all the advice I was given and came up with a plan that suited my situation. Which was to increase feeding, remove some of my extra filtration, cut back on the skimmer to 24hr on every 48hrs. Did that for a few weeks before I added one fish(6 line wrasse) and more c.u.c. Including a peppermint shrimp 3 hermit crabs and 10 assorted snails a few of which have been eaten by the hermits.. Monday will be 3 weeks since I got the new additions. I also had a green bubble tip anemone but it wasn’t happy in my tank walking all over till it wedged itself between two rocks and ripped itself basically in half squeezing itself through. So I had to give it a porcelain burial. That was already a few days ago. And this am I came in to turn the lights on and noticed the milky looking water I’m assuming a bacterial bloom? Whatever it is I am happy it came even though my tank looks off all the chrysophytes are either completely gone or almost completely gone!! Being that This bloom is happening I would think my nutrient levels are rising and am wondering if I should wait till the bloom goes away to do a water change or should I do it sooner than later? Now I’ve jus got brown hairlike algae left in places to deal with once the bloom clears up. I’ve also increased my skimmer on time from 24/48 to 48/24 and will eventually go back to always on.

Sounds like a reasonable change. Water change or not, up to you. If still blooming, water change will only temporarily clear it up a bit, IMHO.

Woke up this am to clear water tested my phosphates and decided a water change is imminent. once the bin of fresh saltwater comes to temp I’ll be in there going to town on the sand bed which is the main harborer of the leftover chryso’s. Any suggestions on a fish I can add to take care of the hairlike stuff that’s left? It’s only a 39 gal bow front. And I’m not too sure if the lfs does trade outs or anything like that for fish that have outgrown customers tanks. So something that won’t grow super fast or big would be great.
