Clear up suspended sediment in only 7 hours

Found a new trick today for fixing suspended sediment issues, inspired by a 2016 R2R thread that nobody commented on.

Added new cured rocks to the tank and they’ve been steadily making the water very murky the past few days, especially because I drilled them to assemble them. I tried filter pads, socks, and floss without any luck the past 5 days. Today I bought a $20 GE whole-house filter housing at the hardware store along with a 30 micron yarn-style cartridge. Put it in line with my return pump. Totally amazed by the results, 7 hours and it’s near-perfect. The pics don’t do justice showing how bad it was. I had ordered a water clarifier but given this success I won’t be needing it.

Great idea to cheaply pull out dust and stuff.

I have a few of those canisters, but with clear housings. I turned them into media reactors. 1/2” pvc will fit snuggly into the center hole and then you can use some filter mesh to hold the media in.

I will be using one for what you did at some point though lol. Again awesome idea.

Can't the back pressure hurt some return pumps.

Marineland makes a filter with a polishing filter you can use that is supposed to do the same thing. Definitely not as cheap as this option though and I can't find the micron rating of their polishing filter.

nah, it won't hurt a centrifugal pump at all. i'll reduce the flowrate a bit (more as the filter gets clogged) but won't hurt anything.

Great idea for cleanup in early stages moving stuff around. Might keep a lot of detritus from settling on the sand or in the sump. Can it overscrub the water removing microscopic life?
if your return pump is running ten times tank volume through mesh socks (100 or 200 micron) and
chaeto it will take an hour to clear a pretty dirty tank

I saw reviews of the marine land and wasn’t impressed by how it did without a flocculating additive. Maybe controversial but I went cheap on the return pump and have a backup unopened in a box, only $15 and super quiet so not concerned about damaging it

There HOT filter used to get good reviews but they quit making them a few years ago. I really need to get something I can use temporarily to polish the water since all I run is a protein skimmer.
