Hi, 6 months into the hobby paying the price of learning some painful lessons re quarantining.

Had 4 fatalities over the last two weeks, all visual (gold/brown fuzzy spots, white fuzzy spots) and behavioral (fast breathing, swimming into power head flow, scratching and flipping) seem very consistent with a double whammy of ick and velvet.

Rollands Damsel is showing visual symptoms but OK behavior, Banggai and and Yellow Striped Wrasse seem unaffected, as are all inverts, shrimps and snails etc. I know it’s not perfect, but first time trying to treat with UV and Hydrogen Peroxide, but a QT tank is on its way.

Question being: saw the clown this morning in the lowest flow area of the tank where it retreated to yesterday with a horrible wound towards the back of its head, with some white fuzzy strings from it (which could be skin). Is that consistent with later stages of Velvet/Ick, one of the three remaining tank mates picking at it (or any of the shrimp/crabs) or some other type of tertiary parasite/infection?

Also noticed some very thin white strings of about 1/3 inch length at the tips of the tail fin of the Bicolor Reef Chromi before it passed about a week ago, if that’s related, because as I understand that’s also not a part of ick/velvet?

And lastly: is there any way to recover from something like this, or is euthanizing the best choice, and Clove Oil the way to do so? It’s heartbreaking to watch this struggle.

8 gallon nano, parameters over the last 2 weeks: pH 7.9 late night to 8.5 late afternoon, Alk 9, Phosphates 0.05-0.1, Ca 543, Mg 1359, Ammo/Nitrite 0, Nitrate 2-5.

Thanks for any pointers, to know/do better in the future.

It’s a nasty open wound either from injury or aggression.
You will need to treat it before it progresses to a bacterial problem.
Melafix will aid with keeping it sterile but Maracyn 2 will help heal as long as no one is picking at/on fish.
Safest bet is to treat in a quarantine setting

Much appreciated!

Wonder where it got it from, was always quite polite crowd and no real sharp edges I could think of, Nero 3 with guard seems impossible to get its head/back into.
