Do you have kids and want to get them into corals and ze wonders of the ze sea? Come to Ocean Night!

I am the marine science instructor at Hall High School in West Hartford and the founder of the Hall High Coral Project. The purpose of the Hall High Coral Project is to bring animals, such as corals and reef fish, into the hands of West Hartford students. Our work minimizes the environmental impact of harvesting corals and other animals from the ocean. Students fragment their own livestock in order to trade with and sell to other hobbyists and small businesses across New England. In an effort to share the students’ knowledge and passion for preserving our oceans, the Hall High Coral Project is hosting Ocean Night, a special community event on June 7th, 2019, from 6-9PM at Hall High School. This event coincides with World Ocean Day on June 8th.

The event is for ALL AGES. Ocean Night will feature a screening of “Chasing Coral,” an award-winning documentary that captures the effects of coral bleaching to reefs around the world. There is an exhibition of art produced by students from six West Hartford elementary schools. There will be a kids’ activity room with labs and games all about corals. This night is a STEAM event (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math). We have planned a RAFFLE to raise money for our new upgraded coral propagation system, which is projected to become the largest system of its kind in central CT!

The goal of Ocean Night is to spread awareness of coral reef bleaching caused by climate change, which is leading to the collapse of entire ecosystems in our oceans. Although West Hartford is far away from these amazing ecosystems, we are all connected to these coral reefs. Scientists and experts can only do so much; change must come from all of us.

So Ocean Night was a huge success!
Results of Ocean Night
- We had somewhere in the lines of 400-500 people come to Ocean Night. Huge variety of people from all over the CT community
- We had booths of all sorts, some were run by the Hall High Coral Project, others run by people in the community. We had the following: Coral Bleaching Station, CO2 Lab, Origami Lessons, Tank Tour, Coloring and Art Station by WH Library, Ocean Children's Books Reading Circle, Coral Viewing Station, Aquaculture Clownfish, Ban the Bag, and HAWA Sustainable Cookbooks.
- Through our raffle, bake sale, and donations we raised over $2000 to go towards our new 300 gallon coral propagation system happening in B225. I'll be building the new coral propagation system in the summer.
- Over 100 people in the community watched the complete or parts of the Chasing Coral documentary, spreading the awareness of coral bleaching
- We had some cross-disciplinary and cross-school action at Ocean Night including displays from AP Stat, poems from English classes, and art from 4 elementary schools.
- People got to walk around a giant coral reef archway that was made out of paper mache, spray foam, and chicken wire. Many selfies were made.
