I have read somewhere that it doesn’t remove ammonia but turns it into ammonium ( I think ) that is a non toxic form. Could be completely off though

That is not correct. Even Seachem says lowering pH (which is how ammonia becomes ammonium) is not the reason.

Nope! Prime® exclusively acts as a water conditioner and will not impact your pH, GH, or KH.
