Coral kindergarten: Do you have a frag tank?

There are many reasons to have a frag tank including an aspiration to be a commercial coral farmer, to grow out your clippings to share with others, or just to take another approach on the stewardship of your own corals. After all, it is an excuse to add another tank which is a good thing, right? Have you added a frag tank to your system? If so, why did you set up your frag tank? What have you found to be the biggest difference between a display tank and a frag tank? Please share your stories and tips in the discussion thread!

I've had several in the past. I'll start a new one when my current corals grow too big.

Frag and separate fish QT to be built prior to main as both will be used to QT new arrivals. No plans to farm corals. I'll just sell my trimmings to the LFS in exchange for supplies. Although the farm bug might hit me and I'll have more to offer my LFS. No time to sell online or go to swaps. Rather be fishing the real reefs.

I'm new, so for me it's just a coral QT tank with just corals and some CUC to add some nutrients.

I love having a frag tank for many reasons!
  • A place to temporarily house new corals for acclimation and future placement purposes
  • A place to frag and grow out frags from main tank mother colonies for back up purposes
  • A place to frag and grow out frags from main tank mother colonies for trading and selling
  • A place to temporarily house a rowdy fish or invert, sometimes permanently
  • A way to add extra water volume and live rock surface area
  • A place to nurse sick coral back to health

My Goodness! Lilpoop, you need to post here more. Maybe a build thread. Those look beautiful. I’m thinking there’s a lot we all could learn from you.

I started out thinking why would anyone need a frag tank unless they plan on trading, selling, or flexing :grinning-face-with-sweat:

I never thought about pest inspection/quarantine, It might be nice to examine under close scrutiny to see if any pests emerge...

Also, I have a reef bowl and I use my 150g as an lfs. I find myself thinking about what will go into the bowl from my 150, I don't think I have ever purchased a coral specifically for the bowl. So a frag tank might be nice to have for ultimate design of my main display!!!

For me anyway, I can never decide where things should go so I end up with a mess!

I have a basement frag tank, it was my solution to combine my little AIO frag tank and a small 30-gallon fish-only system together. Made it an easy sell to the wife!

Ha ha, can you believe that I have been in this hobby for 25+ years and have never had a frag tank! It even surprises me as I am a nurturer but I even buy colonies for my display when I can afford them.
