I'd like to learn more about coralline algae.
What is it?
Is it important to my aquarium?
Can it become a problem?
Can anyone point me to a good authority resource on this topic?

Most likely more info then you ever wanted. It is good to have. It will come if your calcium levels are stable. Scrape off the glass when you see it.

Definetely read the link provided it is good info. Couple short answers though...yes it is generally good in that many people like the look and more importantly it prevents nuisance algae from growing on it.

It can be a problem in that if you got a bunch growing fast it may mean a lot of glass scraping, but not bad at all if you dont let it get too thick. It wont grow over healthy coral or things like that so the benefits definetely outweigh the cost of some glass scraping.

It’s good because it’s a more desirable algae and probably outcompetes other algae. But it does eat alk and elements so you need to dose more than you would without it. It also covers everything including equipment and it’s hard to clean.
