Since I enjoy reading other's build threads, I figured I would add my own. The 150 gallon tank build would begin in early 2020. But first, my current tank was an Innovative Marine 50 gallon All-In-One Lagoon. I had started that tank in 2018 with the idea of starting from scratch with dry rock, (2) AI Hyrda 26HD, a few shrimp and crabs, a single blue chromis and jumping straight to acropora.

I struggled with that tank as you may have already surmised. Almost immediately a stringy brown algae began consuming the white dry rock. The small acro frags that I was seeding the tank with struggled to peak out from the brown algae forest that blanketed the surface of the rocks. The brown algea quickly morphed into what I assumed to be some form of stringy dinos. After months of manual removal, I decided to swap the dry rock out with live rock from a fellow hobbyist. I had enough live rock to fill the tank + some to store wet in a 5 gallon bucket. The dinos began repopulating the new rock within the next few weeks. I decided to dramatically increase the fish population to try to raise nutrients to combat the dinos. I received a Biota Captive Bred Yellow Tang, 3 Pajama Cardinals, and a banggai cardinal. The yellow tang was only about 1 1/2", very pale and had some HLLE. Although it was tiny, I knew that it would need some more swimming room soon and this would be the seed for the 150 gallon build to come.

I continued to struggle with the Dinos. A reefing friend from work suggested I decrease light intensity. This was a tough pill for me to swallow as I knew that the acro frags may be sacrificed, but I conceded to dramatically reduce light intensity for the coming weeks. I combined this with heavy feeding of pulverized pellet food that I broadcast fed the tank to dirty the water. Additionally, I began to dose a saturated kalkwasser solution to the tank with a peristaltic dosing pump. These 3 measures did the trick and the dinos were outcompeted by green turf algaes which I was able to manually remove.

With the dinos out of the way, I began looking for a larger tank. I found a freebie 48"x24"x30" tall Top Fin tank. I was hesitant to take the tank given that these tanks are known to bust seams. However, I came up with a plan to do a partial silicone seam replacement. I scraped out the existing silicone seam fillets while leaving the thin amount of silicone present between the glass panes. Then I reapplied a true 45 degree 3/8" silicone fillet seam all around the tank.

I also wanted to insure that the tank stand was very solid as this can be a major contributor to tank failures. I ditched the old stand and built a 2x4 style stand that I skinned with plywood. The top of the tank was framed with 2x8s to insure there would be no tank deflection. I also made the stand very tall at 42" so that I could comfortably view the tank without leaning down. This puts the top rim of the tank at 6 ft. I added soft-close hinges to the doors of the stand and painted it with a semi-gloss white.

I drilled the tank for an Exotic Marine 20" acrylic overflow. I didnt want to run the risk of the center brace of the tank interfering with the overflow, so I located the overflow on the left side of the tank. I drilled the right side of the tank for (2) 3/4" returns. I had some help placing the tank in position on the new stand, I shimmed the bottom of the stand for level, and filled it up 80% for a leak test. Here is a pic of the tank and stand

I plumbed the overflow with the Bean Animal Method w/ 1" PVC. I installed a sch80 gate valve to the full siphon drain. From left to right: drain - full siphon drain - emergency drain - return #1 - return #2.

I installed Sch80 ball valves to the (2) 3/4" returns. The (5) pipes were secured to the stand with hot dipped galvanized pvc/conduit brackets + hot dipped galvanized carriage bolts + stainless mounting screws. I added a computer fan to the center of the stand for venitilation and (2) DJ power strips for on/off control.

The sump was built with a 40 gallon breeder from the Petco $ per gallon sale. I ordered 1/4" thick annealed glass baffles from Peninsula Glass Company. The last baffle before the return chamber has an extra piece of eggcrate + plastic mesh to keep large debris off of the return pumps. I used 100 lb monofilament fishing leader to tie the plastic mesh to the eggcrate and the eggcrate was siliconed to the top of the baffle and the sides of the 40 breeder. I used (2) DC return pumps with 1 ft of silicone tubing and plastic tubing clamps. The pumps were a secondhand Marine Aqua DC-3000 and a new Jecod DCS-6000. I stapled zip ties to the stand for securing the power supplies. The DC return pumps were dialed down to the lowest power setting.

I finished the sump off with a secondhand Reef Octopus Classic 150 skimmer, (2) 125W heaters, and a Tunze Osmolator ATO. I added (3) AC powerheads to the display for flow and I placed (2) 3/16" thick tempered glass tops over the display to reduce evaporation.

April 2020: I moved over the (2) Hydra26, live rock, livestock, and water from the 50 gallon tank to the new display tank.

August 2020: I added a few more acro frags to join the few frags brought over from the 50 gallon tank. Among these was a forest fire digi, bubblegum digi, highlighter humilis acro, blue/purple tortuosa, and a green ponape birdsnest. I planted a few small pieces of green and red montipora capricornis on the left side of the tank a month before. I also picked up a royal gramma.

August 2020: I decided the (2) Hydra26HD weren't going to meet the lighting demands of the 30" deep tank + tempered glass tops. I picked up (2) secondhand 32" previous gen Reefbreeders that I installed one in front of the other. This dramatically increased the light coverage in the tank. But with it came a new ugly stage in the tank in the form of green turf algae and massive amounts of cyano.

I decided to try to wait-out the ugly stage. After a few months, the amount of cyano would reduce to a more tolerable level.

November 2020: I wanted the SPS closer to the light source, but didnt want to add more rock to the tank. I ordered a scrap piece of 3/4"x11"x33" acrylic sheet and (6) 3/4" acrylic rods that I used to build into an acrylic platform. I used a router to bevel smooth the top and bottom edges of the acrylic sheet. The platform would serve a dual purpose of raising the SPS towards the light source and providing an additional swimming lane for fish traffic.

I also added a powder brown tang and a flame fin tang. This was a milestone moment for the reef since these 2 new additions actually grazed on algae! To date the yellow tang was not fond of grazing algae off the live rock. Within days of adding the new tangs, the yellow tang began to mimic their behavior and also graze! This marked one of the last days of needing to manually remove green turf algae from the tank.

February 2021: the days of manually removing algae aren't quite over like I had hoped. I am going to begin a weekly water change + algae plucking regimen.

May 2021: In the absence of algae, coral growth is beginning to pick up. There are small patches of cyano remaining on the bottom of the tank. A green birdsnest frag and purple stylo frag did not survive shipping. I begin dosing 3-part using (3) BRS Drews Dosers connected to analog 30 minute increment outdoor timers from Lowes. The 3 part is mixed from BRS dry mix.

June 2021: the green and red montipora capricornis are growing rapidly. A purple/blue with green polyp acro is beginning to hit its stride. The sponge ecosystem developing on the bottom of the rock and acrylic platform is interesting to see. Detritus is accumulating below the acrylic platform. This is a hard to reach area when doing water change siphoning.

July 2021: I begin fragging back some of the faster growing SPS to insure the acros wont eventually get choked out.

September 2021: I add a 4th AC powerhead to the side glass for additional flow. It is cool to see the red and green monticaps begin to grow into each other. I added 10 more acro frags in June that are encrusted and growing now.

November 2021: Full tank Shot. I ordered 10 more acro frags that are on the top left frag rack. The bottom of the tank is now littered with frags. I am growing a few lower light demand colonies on rocks on the bottom of the tank now

February 2022: The narrow grills of the AC powerheads that I had been using were frequently clogging with algae. I switched over to (2) MP40s to help reduce maintenance.

March 2022: the red and green monticap have taken over the left side of the tank. The magnet algae scraper is serving dual purpose as a monticap trimmer. The red monticap is beginning to reach the allowed boundaries on the right side as well. The green cap has the high ground against the red cap. I placed a piece of the trimmed red cap on top of the green cap to maintain a balanced ratio of green to red. I added a 3rd MP40 to the right side of the tank.
