Help gents, I recently battled Dinos, & won the fight. Made a post about it & all was well.
Recently noticed something growing in various parts of tank, what looks like algae, but I don't think it is. This time its different then previous time as last time they where darker snotty strings that would vertuallly cover most of surfaces & trapped bubble. This time its more isolated & looks like algae rounded leaf, but when taken out claps like brownish snot.
This sort came about after I started dosing red sea colours A+B, (Nitrates are 8 ppm & phosphate 0.1 using red sea pro test kit)
funny thing is first time they appeared &I was doing acropower lol you would have thought I would learn my lesson.
So am I right in thinking this IS COULD THIS BE Dinos? Or its something else.
PS I stopped my skimmer & stopped my refugium for now I know, increased my return pump speed to max so I get more water flow via UV

I am battling the exact same issue. I overcame dinos, and then ran into this issue after dosing Acropower. I also looked under the microscope and saw the same thing that you did. I am also lost and confused. So I am tagging along for any progress. My issue is only getting worse.

Do you use UV?

I too had this stuff turn up in filter socks -- never really even saw it in the display and certainly not on an corals. At least I think it is the same yellow stuff as depicted on the paper towel photo. I was puzzled, but it faded away over a couple weeks.

Looks like a form of Gracilaria which is a slime similar to dino but is not. Manual removal and adding 10ml of peroxide to each 10 gals and lowering light intensity will diminish this

10m/l per 10 gals. Peroxide has high water content
I was thinking of dosing peroxide.
But here is my worry on drawbacks with peroxide

It kills all organics so I am worried it will wipe out my biomass (nutrifiying bacteria ect)
I have a chateo in my refugium it will most likely kill that in the process.
My understanding is that as long as its dosed correctly coral will not be affected?
Intersingly it certainly spreads like Dinos, but doesn't trap air bubble like Dinos. Also non of this moves under microscope, unlike Dinos.
Thanks all for any suggestions [emoji106]

These two pics together are pretty definitive. This is chrysophytes. Tiny golden motionless embedded in mucus. The mucus being so thick it holds shape out of water on the paper towel.

I finally bought a microscope after trying to get rid of the Dinos in my tank for a few months now. I believe I have two different strains (Is that possible?) From the pictures I’ve looked at in this thread I believe I have the coolia strain as well as ostreopsis dinoflagellates. What do you guys think?

I’ve recently discovered that the chemi pure blue I had in the tank was the cause of my nutrients bottoming out. I had been dosing both PO4 and NO3 to keep them up but once I removed the media bag I’ve been able to keep a steady 10ppm of NO3 and .04 ppm of PO4. Ive also installed an 11watt UV system (I’ve got a 45gal tank) with the hopes of eradicating the problem.

A positive ID would be much appreciated.

check this thread. https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/chrysophytes-help-me-cure-it.263759/
You definitely have ostreopsis and the other strain very likely may be coolia. I'll let @taricha say for sure but I think you are correct.

UV is very effective against ostreopsis.
yep. what salty said.

Pretty sure I'm dealing with coolia.

Here's a link to the thread I started earlier.

I added a video to the thread as well. I just hope the video posted correctly.

What's the preferred method of eradicating these?

I already put the uv back. Checked no3 at 2ppm and phosphorus at 12ppb. Should I up those levels?

Can anyone help me ID these dino's? It looks to me like ostreopsis but I have been wrong before... thanks! I already got an 36 watt aqua medic uv that I will be hooking up tomorrow in my reefer 450.

Yup, ostreopsis. Welcome to the club. Good news is they are pretty easy to beat. 36watts on that size will work. Dosing nitrate and phosphates yet? Strongly recommended if you are 0/0 nutrient.
Agree with Scott.
