I did a huge cleaning tonight - scrubbing the rocks, stirring up the sand. I'll post an update tomorrow. Usually when I do this, they come back right away.

twilliard, what is the lifecycle of dinos? If I left them alone and they cannot reproduce, how long before they die off on their own? Or are they feeding off something in the tank and can stay alive for a while?
This is a great question!
I will add this for my next RN writeup.
The cell itself seems to last less than 12 days regardless of food or light.
My tank will be on day 14 tomorrow and through today no visible sign of repopulation.

I will say that growth on my glass slowed down during treatment. Usually I would have to clean it 1-2 times a day. I cleaned it before starting treatment and did not need to clean it at all for the past 4 days. Also when I scrubbed the rocks much more came off than usual and even just with turkey basting, I was able to blow alot of it off the rocks.

Do we know how long we can use this product in our system with no negative effects to corals, inverts and fish? Last time I removed my sand it took a week for the dinos to come back full force. I think if I remove the sand again and use this stuff for 3 weeks that should be long enough to prevent any dinos not removed from reproducing no?

@Bmwm235i you should not have to remove your sand at all. in fact if you remove your sand for treatment when you reintroduce the sand back into the tank, then you will be reintroducing the dinos.

I was going to use new dry sand. That's what I did last time but without any meds.

If it helps as a reference, fish have been positively identified as a vector for dinos (it is not known how long they remain viable attached to the slime matrix) Reefcentral, chem forum, high res pics from poster DNA is ref source.

At the same time you are still loosing a lot of benefits to the sand by removing live sand and replacing with dry sand all at once

I sent twilliard a sample last week and he identified it as dinos. I started dosing seachem metroplex on Friday and just did the 3rd dose today. I have a 75g DT and ~25g in the sump, so total volume of around 100g. I have been dosing 1,250 mg per day (125 mg per 10g). According to seachem, the included scoop is 125 mg, so I just dosed 10 scoops per day. (Seachem's dosing on the label is 1-2 scoops per 10g, but they also tell you to remove inverts). So far no visible effects on the corals (mainly euphyllia and a few monti caps) or anemone.

I'm curious. Have you not allowed for displacement when calculating your actual water volume?
Thus possibly over dosing?

I don't think there is a high danger (if any) of overdosing. I contacted seachem today and they confirmed that metroplex will stay active in the water column for up to 48 hours, so at day 2 and 3 you pretty much have up to 2x the dose at any given time. I have some pretty interesting photos and possibly promising results to share as well but will wait another day or two to finish my 3 day dose and take sufficient documentation :)

Yes I am asking members of R2R please if you are dealing with dinoflagellates consider sending me a sample for pictures and possible identification.
I've got them in one of my tanks, I can send you some! I just need to remember

Would it be alright to use this API product ? API - General Cure Powder Anti-Parasitic Fish Medication - 10 Packets , Active Ingredients: 250 mg Metronidazole and 75 mg Praziquantel per packet.
5 packets to 100 gallons ?

I thought about this since I had some on hand and prazi is supposed to be reef safe, but decided just to go with metroplex alone.

Prazi would kill featherdusters if you have any. I never did like mixing meds so I personally wouldn't do it, metroplex is only like $6

This I would not advise the use of as unwanted results may skew the results of this thread.

Wow... I looking very much forward to starting this this weekend. I will post updates. Lost my last 2 snails. Total loss of 15 snails and 2 fire shrimps. Have only hermits left. Glass is Turing brown from no clean up crew.
