We have experimented and like the efficiency of the COB LED. The one major drawback is the spectrum.

Over our frag tank we have had excellent results using the Cree CXA 2530 in the cooler bins driven at 1500mA. To achieve optimal spectrum we added 15 Cree XT-E Royal Blue driven at 1000mA 5 XP-E2 Blue at and 10 Semi P2Nu 410-420nm LEDs both driven at 700mA... This gave us an awesome look and growth and more PAR than a 250 watt MH.

One thing to be careful about COB fixtures is many do not Bin their LEDs and some lean a bit towards the warm spectrum which can promote nuisance algae...
