Due to the Hanna packet shortage, I decided to try making a DIY version. The Hanna reagent contains malonic acid, I assume a dye, and quite possibly other things. I found a source for the malonic acid and it looks like it could be pretty inexpensive, but where do I start for the other ingredients?

Does anyone here have an idea on what this non-chemist could look into? Thanks for any help :)

And yes, I know the packets work great and aren’t terribly expensive. This is mostly for curiosity.

This is a nitrate zinc reduction test by another manufacturer. Same wavelength and sample volume. It might be possible to use them and just create your own absorbance curve. Or just poach some of the ingredients.

This is the zinc powder:

You can also examine their SDS for different formulation ideas:

Alternatively, contact them and see if they're interested in producing compatible reagents. They make a lot of reagents designed to work with other manufacturers' devices that are more affordable.

This appears to be the test method used.

I guess the big question is whether there will be another shortage or if they'll be able to keep up with demand now.

Alright, I ordered a Checker and two packs of reagents.

I'm going to give the papers a more thorough reading, do a bit more research, and begin sourcing all the ingredients.

Alright, this is what I have so far:

1631752548296.png

* Restricted but obtainable without too much trouble
** Restricted and kind of a PITA to obtain w/o a lot of effort

v1 = first attempt at DIY reagents.

The method documented in the paper results in a yellow-orange-red product whereas Hanna gives a clear-pink-purple product.

I'll begin ordering ingredients over the next few days.
