Do Birdsnest get skinnier with growth?

Both of my Birdnests colonies branches seem to be getting skinnier as they get bigger. Is this common?

I don't really see them getting any skinnier? That's S. Guttatus the thicker branching BN, and both colonies look normal for that species.
