Do I need powerheads in a QT tank with no corals?

In my experience, yes. Biggest dangers by far in a QT are (a) oxygen depletion and (b) ammonia. I found that my QT did much better when I added flow. A HOB is not enough. You want tons of oxygen exchange. This is even more true if you add medications at any point that deplete oxygen.
