Any update on your recovery? I just went through the same. Found a rusty magnet in my rodi barrel after a couple months of watching odd and random heads die off of blastos, chalice recession, torch tissue recession, stn on sps starting with a slow creep from the edge, random euphyllia polyp bail. I’m 3 weeks post magnet removal but like you said, the damage is already done. Rust is a no go for your system. If you have it, in my honest opinion it’s only a matter of time before it catches up. Mine was being introduced via auto top off. Glad I caught it finally but not before losing thousands in livestock.

After about 6 months, I would say I’m back to normal if not better now that my parameters have leveled out and are stable. The Trident has helped, along with the auto dosing.

My sps never grows and now I have stn. I turned in an ICP test and these are my parameters.

I ran a magnet through my sand and found some black rusted metal bits. I also used to have marine pure blocks but switched it out for live rock. I’ll do a few water changes and run metasorb and see how things turn out. I really don’t want to have to break down my tank but I feel the elevated levels or tin or other metals are what’s causing my sps problems.

What kind of sand do you have that you found metal bits in it? Sometimes equipment magnets rust badly too. Check for any swelling of them. Your icp shouts out corroding metal somewhere.

I used Caribsea Fiji pink sand. About a year ago the magnets for my frag rack had really bad rust. I sealed it with silicone. I wonder if that was the issue. But I Ran a bare bottom tank. I also ran marine pure blocks. I just got rid of all of the sand and marine blocks, put all my rocks and corals in another tub and cleaned out my tank. I now have new sand, 100% water change, and scrubbed my old rocks down before putting them back in. Also checked all of my equipment for any rust. They all checked out okay. I’ll do another ICP test to see if I still am getting readings of heavy metals. Will update here.

Well GFO essentially rust but it is pure iron with no imputes in it.
Most screws, magnets are not pure iron and have other metals, alloys, impurities in them that when they rust/oxidize can be very bad for your tank like for example copper.
