So I tried drilling a 5 gallon tank, this is the first time I’ve tried drilling a tank, and. . . I broke it. I went back to the local fish store and bought the last 5 gallon tank they had, but had a local glass shop drill it for me. . . This went better, but again not according to plan. The drill bit skipped a little bit and the top between the hole and the rim cracked. I think normally this would be a Knogo, but since the crack is above the overflow, and because this is such a low water volume would you still use it?

also, figured I should mention, the glass shop did not charge me.

After taking a second look and rereading that it's only 5 gallons, you may be okay....

I would think the bulkhead will keep the glass together since there's not going to be any real pressure, but you may want to put some sort of precaution in place. Maybe a washing machine pan underneath the tank stand, just in case.

It’s only a 5 gallon just go buy another and try again. This time go much slower.

I have drilled many tanks the 2.5 gallon in 5 gallon in 10 gallon tanks are the hardest ones to drill because of the thickness of the glass every time I have to drill one I usually break one or two first And then I go and buy another $10 tank and I try again

Fill with water and let it sit . There will be minimal pressure inside BUT for the peace of mind , I wouldn’t be ok with the crack
Knowing it will blow apart one day

All right, thanks for the replies everyone. If I’m being honest I think it would hold, between the silicone of the rim and the bulkheads and the fact that it’s only 5 gallons, I feel like I’ve done way sketchy stuff ha ha.

That said I will respect yawls wisdom and advice and find a different solution. In fact, I think I will just buy a hang on overflow. That’s what I’m using on my other tank, basically, and it works great. That way I don’t have to worry about drilling or anything like that.

If you lay it flat on a piece of wood that will help to keep it from cracking and/or blowout , build a dam around hole to be drilled with plumbers pity or play doe. Fill the area with water to keep glass and hole saw cool. Go slow and steady

The crack is up to top, can’t really go anywhere else. Small tank , probably work but care taking not to put unnecessary stress on the plumbing. Plus it looks like the bulkhead covers the crack for the most part.

It will be oki... the crack is already stop drilled and once the bulkhead fitting is in place it will support the glass...if you like run a bead of super glue down the crack both sides... only a small tank and not much px
