With about three years of experience in a nano tank of saltwater, I fell in love with this hobby deeply.
About one year ago, I decided to get rid of the last of my plant tank and focus on the reef tank.

I used a side chamber (inherit old tank), with a skimmer, split chiller and return pump.
My tank is SPS dominant with some LPS.
How to make the creatures in the tank healthier and make the SPS better is my goal of continuous efforts.

[Prequel]
The predecessor of this tank was freshwater, and it has been more than six years since its service in 2012.
At this stage, the tank and cabinet could not be removed from practice, so they must continue to be used.

Some changes:
1.The flow demand of the saltwater is greater than that of the freshwater,
so the height of the side filter baffle is reduced to avoid the height of the waterline being too high.
2.After several earthquakes, the water in the tank was shaken out a lot.
In view of the high corrosivity of seawater, it should be avoided as much as possible. So I decided to cover it with glass above the tank.
Although the light will be sacrificed, at least the risk of water overflow is reduced ...

After confirming that the location of the live rock and the wave will not move again, put the bottom sand.
I mistakenly thought that without sand washing, after entering the tank directly, the whole sandstorm~~~
This just can try the protein, the water in the tank took about a day to clear.
A lot of dust can be seen in the dirt collection cup !!!

I found two small crabs, and the trap bottle was not working for several days.
They may be vegetarian.....

It was really amazing, on the 14th day NO2, NO3, PO4 all return to 0!

I originally wanted to wait a few more days to make the tank more stable, but I thought that I could have a longer working time on the weekend, so I started the moving plan early!

After a busy process of two weeks, I woke up in the morning,
my son took the lead: Can I empty this tank to feed my turtle?
my wife: The taste at home is strange, our house may not be suitable for seawater !!!

Protein Skimmer

The side chamber limited the size of the protein skimmer.
I made a decision between Red Sea Reefer Skimmer600 and HC Wine160.

HC Wine160 is a DC pump. It is very convenient to adjust the flow rate. Appropriate settings can be adjusted for different water levels.
However, in the end, I chose Skimmer600, because the design of the cleaning brush in collection cup is too convenient, and the evaluation on the Internet is not bad.

Combination of protein skimmer and APEX

APEX 蛋白 2020_0514.jpg

1. EnergyBar832 supplies power to protein skimmer.
2. The "feed" setting can turn off the skimmer according to the setting time, and turn on after the time is up automatically.
3. The Level Sensor(SkimLV) decides whether the skimmer can be turned on.(Prevent the skimmer going crazy.)
4. The Level Sensor(Cup) decides whether the skimmer can be turned on.(Prevent the collection cup overflow.)
5. The physical switchs (water change / system power off) determine whether the skimmer can be turned on.

Lighting

When initially planting water plants, I used T8 fluorescent tubes. As the demand for light intensity increased, I changed the lamps to T5 tubes.
Now entering the saltwater, continue to use T5 lamps, but changed the type of T5 tubes.

T5 tubes:
I used one Coral Plus, one Aquablue Special, one Blue Plus and one Actinic.

In addition to T5, I also used LED lamps.
So far, I have used a total of three AI Hydra 52HDs.
The light system is modified with a hand-cranked drying rack, which makes it easy to adjust the height of the lamp.

Auto Top Off

I use APEX for ATO.
As water evaporates, top off with RODI water.
For water loss caused by other conditions, saltwater is added.

APEX補水-1.jpg

1. Level Sensor (tankLV) determines whether water replenishment is required.
2. Pumps power were provided by Link_A and Lnk_B.
3. Salinity Probe Salinity determines whether to top off saltwater or RODI water.
4. Level Sensors (SALTLV & RO_LV) determine whether the pump motor can be turned on.
5. When the pump starts for more than a certain time, the pump is forcibly turned off.
6. The physical switch (water change / system power off) determine whether the pumps can be turned on.

I understand the decision you had to make tearing down your freshwater system as I had to do the same. For me it was a much easier decision because my tank didn't look anywhere near as nice as yours. It was pretty basic in comparison. :)

There is always one less fish in the tank, and there is always one less tank in the house. :D
