Hello,

My Girlfriend bought me a maxima clam as a surprise on Wednesday.
I am still reading about them and did my best to give it the best chance to live -
I got phytoplankton for it, put it very high in the tank and for the last 2 days it looked great!
It was open at all times, reactive to light and in general, it looked like all is going well.

Today at 1 am I saw it fully open without any ill signs and went to bed. This morning I found it on the sandbed upside down, with a blue hermit crab picking at its foot.
I dont know if I caught him early enough or not, I attached photos of how it looks. I don't see any damaged flesh.

The clam is fully closed and it looks like there are some filaments ad the end of the foot?

Should I give it an iodine dip? Should I just leave it?

For now I put it slightly lower in the tank in an area with lower flow.

Please help me save it :(

Will need more people to weigh in in this. Don’t just dip it yet and leave it. Do you happen to have a clam cradle or do you have empty frag plugs and coral rubble lying around? You could diy a clam cradle or crib to house the clam. Your clam must have yet to attach itself to the rock work.
Here’s my diy clam crib for my Crocea and within a day it has attached.

It's got a tiny "bed" it can use.
It looks absolutely precious. I think it should pull through judging from how it is not gaping. I think in about a day, you could give the clam and its bed/cradle a gentle wiggle to see if it has attached with its byssal threads.

Mine was aways open from the moment i took it out of the bag (it was shipped and arrived at my place 2 days later). Even during acclimation it was open. Is it still tightly close like the pictures you have posted earlier? It even squirted water at me when I accidentally touched its mantle with my forcep.

It is quite a pity as it looks like a healthy looking clam. I would advice you to be patient and not try not to change anything in hopes of not adding additional stress to it.

Leave it alone and it should open back up. A good healthy clam will have a new growth ring on the edge of the shell. It will be white. Do not feed it photo directly, just broadcast feed to the tank. Good luck. It’s a great looking clam.

Turds. A great place to buy a healthy clam is pacific east aquaculture. When choosing a clam you want to see that new growth ring. It is a big indicator of health.
