I don't think anyone can argue that we don't fall into frustrating situations with our reefs at some point. Whether it's pesky hitch-hikers, super stubborn algae, or a devastating loss of livestock, we all have (or will have) a story that makes us say, "I almost gave up." What's yours?...

I'll kick it off.

With my first tank, I did give up (for a short period of time). Life and school got in the way, and I didn't have the time to dedicate to maintaining my tank. I rehomed all my livestock and took a break for about 5 years. Now I'm back and feeling good about how things are going! Life still can get in the way, but I'm much better at managing my time and priorities.

The closest I came was when I introduced velvet into my oldest tank with fish I've had for years. I was just going to let them all die and get rid of the tank. I like corals but my fish are pets and I bond with my pets so loosing them takes a toll. My family shamed me into making an attempt to save them so I set up a stock tank to treat them all. I lost a lot but was able to save two of my oldest fish so it was worth the effort.
This gal made it through and has now been with me for 8 years

I quit in 2006 because of financial reasons then came back in 2018 when I could actually afford it. Nowadays I’m thinking about downsizing a lot, but not completely out.

Thank you to everyone who has shared so far. Let's keep it going. I feel like these stories can be very encouraging to some struggling reefers.

P.S. I added some new poll options to fit some of the answers so far!
I didn't see the poll at first, lol. I voted.

I feel like option 5, "I've given up", will get zero votes cuz they probably don't come to r2r anymore.

My first go was a used 90 off Craigslist. Moved it at midnight (guy was getting a divorce, whole story in itself) with NO previous aquarium experience.

The 90 lived for a year and half until a heater failure. Total loss Ishould have bought a new heater... noob.

It sat empty in the living room for a year before rebooting. Got another a year and half or so before the tank sprung a leak (small and slow got lucky). That was in 2009.

I haven't been in it long enough to know. I've managed to steer clear of a lot of early pitfalls, but at some point I'm sure something will happen that will have me questioning myself and if I want to continue.

It took all those losses to understand a few things. It's okay to have a small tank if that fits your lifestyle. I don't think people understand the commitment a large tank takes.

I don't know if you are serious? If I weave a tale of reefer depression I am pretty sure I could crash the site and then get rich from the outpouring of support from the Go FUn me page set up for me "by a buddy."

Truth is I am too lazy/distracted/detached from reality to try and recreate the story. If you really want to hear it, maybe set up that donation site for me and give me a reason to spin, I mean live again. Thanks You, God Bless. :hushed-face:
