Do I need to cut off or otherwise remove what I assume is a dead polyp? Thanks for any advice. Totally new, first coral shipment.

Yes let the Coral rest for a good amount of Days. Shipping can for sure stress the animal. If the polyp head is dead it will recede away.

Note sure this is your case, but a lot of times there is glue or pieces of the previous substrate attached to the coral/frag. I usually just leave it as the coral will grow over it eventually.
