The kids and I busted out their microscope today for fun but to also diagnose some algae growing on the sand in our fairly new tank. We already went thru a brownish looking diatom phase weeks ago. This newer stuff looks like green diatoms under white light, but we wanted to make sure. It is on the rocks and glass too. So maybe some green algae as well.

From the microscope pics you can definitely see individual pinnate diatoms. I don't think I saw any dinos, but this was my in first attempt and it's a cheapo microscope.

As for the other stuff? Maybe some long strands of green cyano? What is the big clump of green algae? Just your basic green dust/slime? There were lots of other smaller little dots but they were hard to focus on and didn't really look like anything. I've seen some of the dinos videos where those things were plentiful, apparent and swimming around.

Saw a nematode or two as well! Not much moving stuff besides those and the diatoms slowly creeping along.

PS: I suck at taking pics, what's the secret? I was just putting my phone up to the objective.

In the first pic, the green strands probably are green cyano. In the third pic, it's some sort of unknown algae.

I put the lens of my phone right up to the microscope IP as well, and just use the phone Zoom to hone in on the section I'm interested in.

I could never get my current iphone to take a picture, as soon as I got the lens centered over the microscope it would switch to one of the other lenses.

I have a Pixel 6 Pro... Using the telephoto lens worked pretty well but you have to have a STEADY hand lol. No caffeine!

I am having some issue with dinos so I purchased a slightly pricier microscope that records photo and video, and despite affirming I have to deal with a massive pain in the neck now, it is honestly so cool seeing everything. Here are some vids:
