Hello All,

Decided to start a build thread on the recommendation of some of you, to track the journey and progression as well as share it. I've always wanted a reef tank but the time and circumstances were never right, until now!

I managed to pick up this tank from a house that was being renovated, it was initially in the wall between the kitchen and the living room and managed to lift it out to my car using some straps and the help of a builder on the site. I knew even less than than I do now and didn't realize that ultimately I would end up drilling two holes the tank in the back corner using a 45mm diamond bit and drill jig from amazon. I did this outside in the garden with a friend holding the hose over the holes as I drilled, took about 5 minutes per hole and worked perfectly. Planning on building a glass weir over this once the bulkheads/plumbing is in and using a gate valve to control the overflow with the other hole being the emergency overflow.

Startup:
I'm in no rush, plan on cycling for at least a month, maybe some help from a bacterial starter. Yet to decide whether I'm going to put in any live rock to help, I'm leaning towards no and cycling from scratch as I don't want to bring in any pests.

Livestock:
Definitely planning on a pair of Clownfish but ultimately want to focus on corals, I'll have mostly utilitarian fish, but who knows where I'll end up.

Invert plans and goals:
Mainly an LPS/Softie tank, I love the movement generated by the flow in the water and that aesthetic is really what i'm going for. I haven't read a ton about clean up crews yet, i'll start with whats recommended at the beginning and add as needed I think.

As you can probably tell I'm an extreme rookie and would really appreciate any advice moving forward. I've yet to decide on lighting and as this seems to be very important, not sure what real spread and par I need for a 5x2x2, but looking at LPS/Softies.

Possible hardware additions:
Ca Reactor
Algae refugium
Roller?

Thank you for your time and attention,

Jake

After the above I built the weir, first time I've ever used silicone or glass, was very messy but managed to get 10mm glass from the local store, its all square enough. Thinking i'm going to stick acrylic over it eventually to make it look neater.

Finally I put the aquascape in and fired the lights up, really happy with how its looking so far. Once the weir has dried ill test fill it for leaks. Aiming for water in next weekend!
Any feedback/suggestions would be much appreciated.

Looking good, just make sure you leave space between the rocks and glass for the magnet glass cleaner.
Are you going to add anything to the bottom or run the tank bare bottom?

With Softies and LPS I wouldn't go the calcium reactor route, unless your LPS get really big and thirsty, Kalkwasser or 2 part will be more than enough for your tank.

I would say plus 1 on the Bottled Bac for speeding up the cycle.

All the best with the marine journey.

Finally cycling!
I opted for the Red Sea Starter Reef Kit bacteria over anything live.
Water levels seem to have balanced and we're moving forward now. Says 3 weeks until complete so will continue to test pH, kH etc.

After putting a bit of live rock in the sump and having ammonias at 0 after a week I decided to add some more live rock and a few Chromis to finish things up.
Even got a few free mushrooms on the live rock. Touch!

So after 3 days of adding the Chromis and some more live rock my parameters at the moment are;

PH - 8.2
Ammonia - 0-0.1
Nitrites - 0
Nitrates - 2
KH - 9

Wondering exactly when i'll be ready for more fish... i'm thinking i could probably add a few clowns now but completely new to this so not sure. Also havent got a skimmer on yet so maybe thinking i should wait, but then i cant see 2 clowns pushing the bio-load up too much right?

Any feedback/thoughts please?

With a tank of that size, decent amount of rock and you say you have real live rock in your sump then a couple of clowns will be just fine to add. You can just not over feed, dosing bottled bacteria will also help and without a skimmer you may just need to do water changes a little more frequent.

What do you plan on adding after the clowns, I would suggest start looking into fish that will help with the algae that will be coming soon, like the tang gang and so on...

Thanks a lot for the feedback -
Ive been looking at the Sailfin Tang but i read that generally they like being the only tang and will show aggression to others?

This piece of rock covered in GSP was going at my LFS, tends to be high end corals there with less of the common stuff so managed to pick this up cheap.

All in all have had some trouble staying on top of algae outbreaks with the limited clean up crew;
Have added 5x Hermits, 10x snails 1x boxer shrimp and an arrow goby.
Picking up a sailfin tang next week and think im just gonna keep going with the snails.
Nem is now hiding on the backside of a rock, i dont think i have much control over where he goes, so just gonna let him do his thing.
