@Maokin would love your recommendations on what kinds of corals to consider in this tank. I’d like to start planning coral placements before the meet up in October. Will try to get a few clean photos posted tomorrow.

Seems most everything survived the first night, which is encouraging. I’m going to wait another day before testing tank parameters as things continue to settle. For now, here are the updated tank shots. Will be doing some minor rockscaping in the front, as I don’t love the look on the left hand side. But for now, it will do!

Shoutout to the people at @LiverockRocks for their outstanding customer service. I was supposed to receive the live sand and rock on Thursday, but a late-night surprise by the TSA changed our plans. Without missing a beat, TBS emailed me with a new delivery plan and made sure that my shipment was in the air this morning.
...

There is one potential worrisome hitchhiker, and I’m hopeful someone here can chime in. When I was pouring the sand in, I noticed a very fast moving white worm(s) darting around the tank. I am guessing they are some sort of detritus worm, but can someone ID for certain?

It's a detritus worm, good CUC. Great build thread! Looks as though all is going well, and you got some really cool hitchhikers!

To which crab are you referring? With help from another user, we were able to make a positive ID on the Shellback crab, although not sure what species.

Have not yet been able to identify the little white crab with horizontal stripes on its carapace. Best guess seems to be some kind of porcelain crab, so that’s what we’ve been running with.

I'm referring to the little white one. Does it have the feathery filter-feeding appendages? I can't tell. If so, you probably nailed the i.d. already.

Hard to tell, unfortunately. I’m considering sending a picture to the Biology faculty at a local college to learn if they might be able to assist in identifying this crab.

As a child, I had the privilege of maintaining freshwater tanks but never a reef tank. The hobby was just too much for me in terms of cost and complexity.

I am so grateful that as an adult I have the financial resources and the support of my partner to dive into a reef tank of my own. It is just so cool to me that this is my “office view” everyday now. Can’t wait till we add the fish and coral!

Our latest order of premium live rock from TBS includes some really unique critters, but the true stand outs are the various sponges. Every day I find more varieties, but these are a few I have photographed so far.

And we picked up at least one new coral hitchhiker!

Here’s our original coral hitchhiker. Though the coral lost much of its zooxanthellae, the polyps otherwise seem healthy.

Run from it, hide from it, aiptasia will find its way into your tank. Meanwhile, your peppermint shrimp will stare at it like wet paint.

That looks like light bulb anemone. Aiptasia are not native to the Gulf. Will probably be okay as long as you don't target feed.

You got some beautiful sponges!

I’m amazed how quickly new coral polyps can grow in. Looks like our latest hitchhiker coral has already expanded!

Last night, I spotted an isopod cruising around the sand bed. I had hoped this was a harmless amphipod of some sort, but it seems most likely that this is a cirolanid isopod of some variety. While not parasitic, these isopods are known to bother fish, unfortunately. With help from @radav88, I have a plan to catch this and any other cirolanids in the tank before we add our fish.

When my new premium live rock was delivered last Tuesday, I took out some of the base live rock to make room in the tank. The live rock I removed was placed outside on a plastic tarp to try. It’s been relatively rainy and cool these past few days, and honestly I forgot the rock was out there.

Well, today I went to move the rocks, and I found this brittle star underneath one of the rocks curled up in a small pool of water. Just to see what would happen, I placed the star back in the tank, and I was shocked when it started moving!

Time will tell if the star will survive, but I’m just amazed it held on even this long.
