I would love to own 1-3 baby drum fish...BUT I do not think I will ever have a tank large enough to be able to keep one as they grow up.

We all have those fish that we would love to have in our reef tank and for one reason or another we don't have one. Maybe it would eat all your coral or maybe the price tag is too high! Whatever the reason is this "fish" has become the fish of your dreams. Let's talk about it today and why you can't have one!

1. What is the fish of your dreams?

2. What are the reasons you can't have your dream fish?

I love the powder blue tangs. I can't have it yet because my tank is still in the build process. I'm getting there some day!

Isnt that a jackknife fish? Or are they the same thing?
Spotted Drum.... very fast growers....and gorgeous fish imo....some dare to try them in a reef. But tank needs to be sizable as they are fairly shy, and still heavy eaters, so need to be fed well....a challenge.

How big is your tank? In a bigger tank 6 lines are great because they have lots of space and dont bother others.
55g, 48" long. I have all very peaceful fish though (neon goby, ocellaris pair, whitespotted pygmy filefish, orange spotted prawn goby) and I'm not sure if it would attack my fire shrimp or not. I am thinking about adding some kind of wrasse soon though but maybe a flasher or yellow coris. Open to suggestions.

My dream fish is orange spot filefish but can't keep one.

I will definitely want a moorish idol, copperband butterfly and/or blonde naso in my waterbox 220.6 but my tank is too young and all these fish have poor survival rate in home aquariums.
I’ve got 3 orange spots in my mixed reef. There are much better food options available now. Mine have been devouring masstick since day 1. I also feed them Panta Rhei Sponge and Panta Rhei Polyp. They eat the frozen and pellets I feed everyone else too. They do some minor pecking at my few SPS frags, but don’t cause any harm.

Unfortunately the list of dream fish grows as I make my stocking list. Mostly for the same reasons as others; adult size, compatibility, and cost.

1. What is the fish of your dreams?

I am fortunate to complete a majority of list. . . Chevron tang, achillies tang, Vlamingi tang, school of yellows, Gem Tang, Marine Betta and more. May consider Moorish idol yet and Harlequin tusk

2. What are the reasons you can't have your dream fish?

The Erratic rise in prices and trying to find fish of large size for larger show tank. Really want my unicorn tang yet with horn

I have wanted a Spotted Grouper (Cephalopholis argus) since I can remember. I would love the chance to raise one from a young age. For me to feel comfortable housing one would require a massive FOWTR tank, I'm thinking 750 gallons of dimly lit caves.

Heniochus diphreutes - the reef safe schooling bannerfish. I'll never get them because a) they're never available and b) I'll never have enough tank.

Mine doesn't eat corals. He'll come up to one, mouth it, and move on. Of course that could change any time, but I can get more coral :)
Maybe I can use the fish to convince my wife to get a bigger tank. I currently have a 120 gallon which would be too small.

Box fish.
My tank is too small. 55 gallon. Hard to acclimate... I don’t want to risk the rest of my tank.
