At 6' tall, it's still not easy to reach the sand bed at the front much less the back of the tank. Step stool and grabby took is a must.
My husbands 6' and that tells me your tank is on a taller stand.
He just reaches the bottom of the tank like it's nothing. I have self esteem issues, so he isn't allowed to do that no more...

Is there going to be enough room on the left to mess with plumbing?
There should be. The plumbing will drop straight down out of the overflow box which sits 6" off the glass. It should kick into the sump through the slot in the stand and straight down.
