Picked up a flame angel last Thursday and am going to lose it tonight in observational QT. Tail started showing some swelling last night and it rapidly progressed. Anyone know what this is?

Heavy bacterial infection which may have stemmed from bite or injury but is infected. This fish will need to be placed in quarantine and treated with seachem neoplex for at least 7 days and you will want to monitor ammonia levels with a reliable test lit and add an air stone for added aeration during treatment.

Too late for that, unfortunately. He's somersaulting. I should have treated right away but I haven't had issues from this vendor before and the fish looked fine yesterday morning. It hadn't eaten yet though which was a good sign something was up.

Do the scales seem raised like a pineapple? I’ve seen that before but I don’t know the cause, I suspect Icthyophonus fungus. It isn’t treatable though…..

As a matter of fact, they did. It progressed so quickly and as it got whiter and continued to bulge, I had that exact thought, it reminded me of a pineapple.

Might be the same issue. It doesn't seem to be super contagious though - like Uronema, it shows up in some fish but doesn't spread to others. Also like Uronema, it seems to start internally, and the visible symptoms aren't seen until the very end.

Sorry....

Such a bummer. This was a really nice specimen too. It had a ton of blue in the fins and really nice striping. I emailed the vendor to see if the other flame angels that arrived at the same time are exhibiting any symptoms. I should have known better, the fish had just arrived the day before, but they were on sale so I wanted to take advantage.

Thanks for the help, Jay!
