I want to use a vertical float switch in the top of the skimmer cup to prevent overflows. Any recommendations? Have others done this already or is this a horrible idea?

Thanks,

Brian

I have a float switch in my SRO5000 Reef Octopus skimmer cup. I bought a nylon bolt and drilled center out to run wire from float through and hooked to breakout box on Apex. Works great.

Thanks. I actually have one of the skimmate locker but have no room unfortunately to use it in my stand. Was really disappointed with that as they work great.

Jeremy, any particular float switch? One of my worries is getting one that's too short. I have a Aquamaxx Cones Q-3 skimmer.

Why not pull the pressure switch out of it and mount that in your lid?

The Avast pressure switches are available separately and a great option.

I bought a 5/16 by 2.5 inch nylon bolt and a float switch from Brs. I used the nut to couple the bolt and float switch together. With the length of the bolt and float it was perfect depth.

My collection container has a float valve in it to stop skimmer when full through my RKE.

Thanks. The programming I had as it's similar to the water detectors but wasn't sure if people had used it in the skimmer cup or not or issues with a float valve gunking up too quickly and not functioning. When I'm home I'm always checking on the tank but wanted something to monitor the skimmer when I'm travelling so could try to get the wife to clean it.

HAHAHA!!! If your wife is anything like mine, not a chance! She'll do anything for me, but I'm pretty sure cleaning the skimmer cup is off the table.

That's one of the reasons I like the Avast pressure switches...no moving parts at the fluid you're sensing. And their Davy Jones Locker lets you go much longer without emptying skimmate :)

Another apex program
-
Fallback OFF
Set ON
If Sw2 OPEN Then OFF
If FeedA 030 Then OFF
If FeedD 005 Then OFF
Defer 003:00 Then ON
-
SW2 is the skim container switch
Feed A is for feeding
Feed D is for water changes
The defer line is to give time for the sump level to stabilize before the skimmer comes on.

I agree 100%. I have one but don't have room for it in the new stand(original tank had a seem let go) and having a cylinder of fish poop sure won't do wonders for my marriage.
