I've been debating on adding a skimmer to my tank. I currently have my sponge filter in slot one pulled up so my dwarf seahorses can't get sucked up. If I add the skimmer in slot 1 would I need some sort of plastic screen in front of the intake so they won't be sucked up?

Don’t get the skimmer. Worst reefing purchase I have made and it does on me after a month. I would try and reduce the pump flow instead of a screen but I would use something thicker like filter floss to spread the suction out

Thanks. I've been ready about a ton of people opting for filter floss

Dwarfs are a different beast as they can’t handle high flow. I have like 25x turnover and a flow director to really polish the water. Without the food and waste being suspended a skimmer might be a better option for you but skip the fluval one. A few people have gotten it working well but most toss it after a month.
